The thermal upgrade involved installing insulation both above the rafters and between the joists, with the specification designed to meet current Building Regulations and required U-values. Hodgson Sayers worked with specialist suppliers to ensure the specified insulation systems could achieve the required performance.

The project also included works to a large polycarbonate roof section covering an outdoor play area used by pupils.

Working within a landlocked school site presented logistical challenges, with materials having to be moved around the site by forklift.

The roofing works were completed to a Marley roof tile specification, requiring the team to work with the specified tiles, felt, battens, verges and ridge systems.

Some elements of the project involved bespoke roofing systems that are not widely used across the industry, requiring a high level of skill and experience from the site team. Six operatives worked on the project, including two roofing apprentices who gained valuable experience alongside the wider team. An additional experienced senior roofing operative also supported the project, bringing extensive knowledge and expertise to help deliver the more complex elements of the work.

The project was successfully completed during the 6-week holiday period, allowing the school to benefit from the roof improvements ahead of pupils returning.
