Honesty, decency & integrity are our guiding principles

A Supplier of Choice

We are primarily a specialist roofing, building maintenance and security products company, that operates across the UK from our headquarters in Stanley, County Durham and a base in Nottingham. We employ a mix of highly skilled operatives including contracts managers, joiners, roofers and bricklayers, who service the needs of our diverse client base, the majority of whom are in the public sector and the utilities.

Customer feedback consistently tells us that we are a supplier of choice because of the emphasis we place on high quality communications, our consistency in delivering on what we say we will do and, crucially, our ability to find solutions to the most challenging of projects.

History

We opened for business in 1979 and founding director, Billy Hodgson, is today our executive chairman. Over the years we have consistently grown and employ over 100 staff. There have been many changes within our sector and we have embraced and welcomed all those advances that have made our business and, the industry in general, safer, more efficient and forward looking. Some of the most dramatic developments have been in health and safety, the introduction of technology and now, increasingly, sustainability and carbon reduction.

We have won a plethora of awards both for the individual skills of our elite craftsmen and apprentices, been listed as one of the fastest growing companies in the UK on three occasions and crowned national SME of the Year by the British Chambers of Commerce.

Values and culture

Our guiding principles are honesty decency and integrity. It is our absolute belief that if we conduct our business set against these three pillars, we will thrive, even in the most difficult of times.

Action speaks louder than words and we have continually reinforced our commitment to our guiding principles through the investment we make in the training of all our staff, the practices and policies in place to support the wellbeing and mental health of our colleagues, our desire to reinvest time and money in those communities in which we operate and the transparent and open relationships we forge with customers.

In line with our values, we have been an accredited National Living Wage employer for a number of years. At the time of joining, we were the first construction company in the North East and only the second in the UK to make this voluntary commitment. The National Living Wage is set at a higher rate than the government living wage. We did this because it was the right thing to do.

David Greenwood Finance Director An accomplished and highly experienced financial expert, David’s primary role is to ensure essential data flows across the business which helps the finance and wider management team, to make informed decisions. David, joined in 2021 and was already a familiar face at Hodgson Sayers having undertaken consultancy work for the business. Like many people, having sampled life at Hodgson Sayers, the opportunity to work with the business full time was irresistible.

Sustainability and the Environment

Our commitment to sustainability and the environment cuts deep within our business. From the introduction of a hybrid car fleet and the installation of photovoltaics at our headquarters, to the eradication of one-use plastic, we are continually monitoring and assessing our carbon footprint.

We continually assess the environmental standards set by our existing suppliers, monitor and engage with non-traditional supply chains to source alternative products and work hand-in-hand with our customers to provide solutions to their own sustainability requirements. It is a constant journey and one that every member of our team is committed to.

Our environmental duty of care extends to our footprint within the communities in which we operate.

Environmental duty of care

Our environmental duty of care extends to our footprint within the communities in which we operate.

This includes;

We seek sustainable solutions and commit to minimise wastage of materials, the resources allocated to site and the resulting carbon footprint. We monitor this on a quarterly basis with an Environmental Report going to the senior management team, which feeds into our company objectives.

We protect the ecology – the existing landscape, wildlife, vegetation and water courses in and around our sites.

We ensure sites appear professional and well managed, so that the external appearance enhances the image of our company and the construction sector. We put great emphasis on the sites being well organised, clean and tidy.

Social value and community engagement

As a national company with strong links to the community, we look at our social value in two ways. The first being the voluntary contribution we make to worthy causes and charities across the North East and other parts of the UK. Our support, which can be financial or through the giving of our time, is a blend of direct support coming from the company and spontaneous acts of generosity from our work colleagues. From sponsoring junior sports teams to renovating community shelters or drop-in cafes for the unemployed, we really appreciate the opportunity to help.

Social value also comes high in the contracts we undertake. Delivering a high-quality contract on time and to budget is satisfying, but our greatest pleasure is the added social value we can bring to projects on behalf of our clients.

We are forward thinking and optimistic
