The opening of its first base outside of the North East, is further confirmation by County Durham-based, multi-award winning building and roofing specialist, Hodgson Sayers, of its expansion strategy taking shape.
The company has established an office in Ben Arran House, Wigwam lane, Hucknall, Nottingham and appointed Eddy Maxwell MBE as contracts manager for the Midlands with a brief to build on the wider opportunities presented to Hodgson Sayers after it secured a place on the Efficiency East Midlands Framework (EEM) in 2017.
Hodgson Sayers has already won contracts in excess of £1million on a variety of roofing projects in Leicester, Rugby, Northampton and Nottingham.
John Sayers, managing director, Hodgson Sayers, which was crowned national Business of the Year in the British Chamber of Commerce Awards 2015, said: “While the North East is our heartland and the focus of so much of our activity, we are ambitious and realise that expansion outside of our traditional market is a natural next step. The EEM framework has provided us with a consistent level of work and given us the confidence to establish a base in the region.
“We identified Nottingham as the location for an office and are delighted to appoint Eddy Maxwell as contracts manager for the Midlands. Eddy’s role will be to build relationships with existing and potential customers and to manage recruitment of staff.
Eddy has been involved in a number of initiatives over three decades, aimed at assisting the long term unemployed back into work and was awarded an MBE in 2012. In particular, he played a prominent role in the development of an arts centre in Hyson Green, Nottingham. He ran his own contracting business for a 35 year period until 2017.
Eddy said: “I believe that there are tremendous opportunities for Hodgson Sayers in the Midlands. The recession saw many casualties in the roofing contracting sector in the region, so there is certainly a role for a major player. Over and above that, Hodgson Sayers, for a company in this sector, is highly unusual.
“Most focus purely on price and cost cutting, whereas Hodgson Sayers has a clear set of values that guide everything it does and which manifests itself in very strong business practices. By way of example, the investment and commitment it places in the training of apprentices and its stewardship of environmental issues are unusual within the sector.
“While the company understands that it has to be competitive in the market to win business, there is no doubt in my mind that potential customers will be very attracted to Hodgson Sayers’ values and culture. It is going to be interesting relaying this to people that have not encountered the business before.”
The Stanley-based company, which employs over 100 staff, has seen considerable growth in recent years and has been listed for the third successive year in Ward Hadaway’s Fastest 50 growing companies in the North East.
Hodgson Sayers is embracing new technology as part of its expansion plans and is integrating Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software into its systems and processes.
The company is renowned for offering high quality jobs to young people in the North East. It currently has 20 apprentices and is actively looking to appoint a further ten. They are supported and encouraged by managers across the business, the vast majority of whom were apprentices themselves and they are all guaranteed jobs on completion of their training.
