Sunderland’s iconic Fulwell windmill is a local landmark, with the six storey building standing impressively in the area since the beginning of the 19th Century.
In 2012 it was closed to the public.
Backed by a range of local bodies, a tender was put out to restore the windmill back to its former glory.
As an approved installer of Restrix roof coverings, Hodgson Sayers was appointed by the main contractor, Owlsworth JLP to restore and repair the restrix roof coverings.
- To apply a Resitrix roof covering to the roof of the windmill. Owlsworth manufactured the roof structure and built it up on site at floor level and the Hodgson Sayers team to apply the roof coverings.
- A harness to be worn at all times when working on the upper parts of the roof structure.
- The windmill roof to be lifted by crane into position on the top of the windmill. The team to re-attend the site to finish the application.
- A challenging project due to the shape of the roof hatches and where the sails are adjoined. Each section to be cut out and shaped in a position where the Restrix is applied.
The unique project and the challenges therein are part of some of the more interesting projects undertaken by Hodgson Sayers Ltd, proving there are always opportunities to learn.
