Ledger Team Leader, Tarnya Henderson, gives us an insight into what rocks her boat when she is at work and at play!
Outside of work I am pretty active. I go to the gym twice a week and walk my dog three times a day to ensure I hit 10,000 steps. It’s a good regime and ideal to combat all of those hours sat behind a desk.
However, I have also got an adventurous streak!
Along with my husband and two friends, we recently bought a small yacht which is docked at St Peter’s Marina, Byker. I have been spending many a weekend getting to grips with nautical terms, practicing knots and learning the fine arts of sailing.
Our first excursion was a bracing trip down the River Tyne and along the coast. It had its moments but we gained in confidence.
The four of us then enjoyed an even bigger challenge as we put our sailing skills into action this September and hired a yacht to sail around Greece. That was some adventure!
Back to business. I joined the company in 2009 as a temporary purchase ledger and I have remained. Why? Because of the people – I have a great team around me.
Since the age of 16 I worked for my father’s construction company before I opened my own confectionary and a delicatessen shops.
I had five shops which I eventually sold to return to the family construction business where I introduced computerisation and new systems that would enhance us in a competitive market.
When my father retired and sold the business I undertook an AAT accounting course to further my finance skills.
Nine years on from joining Hodgson Sayers my role is varied and each day is different. I have four people in my team and one of them is Steven Start who I enjoy mentoring and he is also on the AAT course. Hopefully, he is benefitting from my tips! My other fantastic team members include our administrator, Deborah Miller, sales ledger, Penny Owen and purchase ledger, Karen Breen.
On a day-to-day basis we handle the invoices that come in, make sure statements are correct and we coordinate all areas of finance including payments to contractors. We also record all orders placed with suppliers and there’s a few! The phone never stops!
The finance team, administrators and senior management meet on a quarterly basis to ensure we are all kept up-to-date with work flow.
My team go above and beyond to complete their work. Indeed, I am proud to say the finance department runs like clockwork! We are not afraid to question and challenge each other and I like that. I want my team to question me and each other so that we are always on the ball.
There are times when I may be all at sea but my team keep me grounded!
