Supporting our local food banks

A massive thank you must go to all colleagues, subcontractors and stakeholders who put their support behind our administrator, Cheryl Richmond’s call-to-action by donating goods to Newcastle Food Bank.

Following a radio appeal, Cheryl brought the initiative to the team’s attention after hearing that it was struggling to meet increasing demand with 800 people through their doors every week. The people in need of donations are both vulnerable and in poverty and include adults, children and families from across all different backgrounds.

A shortage of donations to the appeal would have meant that during the summer holidays food would have to be rationed.

With three weeks’ notice everyone pulled together a great result.

On 03 July, boxes were deposited in our buildings and warehouses and we had a cut-off date of the 21 July for the produce to be dropped off before the school holidays commenced.

Donations included everything from pasta, cereal, biscuits, popcorn, crisps, tomato ketchup… the list is endless!

We donated to Newburn Factory this year, which will then distribute all of the food to Newcastle Food Bank. They have also said that if other food banks are struggling they will look to redirect food to them. Last year we donated to Chester-Le-Street.

A big thanks must also go to administrator, Penny Owen, apprentice, Ben Seaward and driver John Gray, who helped load the van and supplied the goods!

Our next event is being organised by Penny and is for the Macmillan Cancer Support in September. The team can look forward to bacon and sausage sandwiches, sweet treats and savoury options as we will look to better the impressive £716 raised last year!
