Success on the national stage for apprentices

As we continue to grow the business, our strategic partnership with Newcastle College is proving very successful, assisting us to identify, nurture and develop the careers of talented individuals.

We are proud that our people development initiatives which have seen our apprentices win national acclaim remain as strong as ever.

This year, we have appointed 10 new apprentices, seven of whom study the traditional trades in either slating and tiling or flat roofing. Jessica Heron is studying an administration apprenticeship and, for the first time, we have welcomed two management apprentices, Ashley Dickie and Jack Franklin.

We now have 24 apprentices across the business and the strength in depth is very impressive and is proven on the national stage.

For example, Kieran Forster won the Icopal national flat roofing Apprentice of the Year award in 2018. As a first year apprentice, his success is phenomenal. He credits his mentor, Steve Jones, for taking his talent to the national stage.

Following on from Kieran’s success, we were extremely proud of apprentices, Jordan Condren and David Crank after their magnificent silver and bronze medals at WorldSkills UK in roof slating and tiling. Apprentice, Brad Hayes also had the opportunity to showcase at the three day event in Birmingham.

We continue to appoint our apprentices as a group which creates friendships and strong bonds and the support and backing for Kieran, Jordan and David from their teammates was fantastic to see.

Our mentoring process remains a priority and we have seen just how crucial the correct pairing can be with the success of Kieran and Steve. Our aim is to build their confidence, encourage them to be independent and fast-track their careers.
