Punching above weight in Cumbrian school

Award winning building and roofing specialist, Hodgson Sayers, has soared to new heights as it managed the installation of a new roofing system at Netherhall School in Maryport, Cumbria.

Led by contract manager, Dave Wakenshaw, the team sourced local subcontractors to work alongside its operatives to deliver the project.

Due to the relationship formed with the school, the company also provided its services, free of charge to the value of £2,000, to refurbish a local community sports hall.

Dave Wakenshaw, said: “This was an extensive project which required a lot of planning. Initially, work took place to the roof and then we replaced the school’s mechanical pipeline.

“A challenging assortment of flat and pitched roof coverings replaced the existing built-up felt, with a mixture of mechanical heating, cavity trays and roof lights installed across the roof systems, which we undertook over a 12 month period.

“We worked alongside the facilities management department at the school. It was crucial when replacing the roof lights that we enabled the school to plan, so that classrooms could be rearranged and disruption kept to a minimum.

“The head teacher at Netherhall School, David Tromans, informed me that the school was one of the partners looking to set up a satellite boxing and training venue for the wider community.

“Having talked through the idea with my colleagues we agreed to refurbish the hall by donating our time free to the value of £2,000. It is great to be able to work on projects where you can also add real social value to the people and communities that are involved.”

David Tromans, said: “The roofing project was executed to an excellent standard and we can only thank the company for its very generous donation of time to refurbish the sports centre. It is safe to say, Hodgson Sayers will be welcomed back to Netherhall with open arms!”

Multi-award winning Hodgson Sayers offers specialist skills in roofing, building works, fencing and metalwork fabrication.

In 2015 the company won the SME award at the Constructing Excellence Awards in London. This was followed by UK Business of the Year and the People Development Award at the British Chambers of Commerce national final.

For the last three years in a row it has been listed in the London Stock Exchange Group 1000 Companies to Inspire Britain.

In 2017 it was listed as one of 12 companies from the North East in the Financial Times 1000 Fastest Growing Companies in Europe.

Social value is at the heart of the business and, as such, it has formed a committee which meets each month to canvas opinion, explore potential initiatives and plan events in conjunction with stakeholders.
