On yer bike.. Contracts Manager, Dave Wakenshaw joins thousands of people who roared into action to help raise money for Prostate Cancer and Men’s Mental Health

On Sunday 24 September, myself and colleague, Tom Kindly, joined thousands of keen motorcyclists on a mission to raise funds and awareness for both Prostate Cancer and Men’s Mental Health.

How did I get involved with this?

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was founded in Sydney, Australia by Mark Hawwa, inspired by a photo of Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic bike and wearing his finest suit. Mark decided a themed ride would be a great way to combat the often-negative stereotype of men on motorcycles, whilst connecting niche motorcycle communities together.

The first ride in 2012 brought together over 2,500 riders across 64 cities. The success of the event encouraged the founder to consider how it could be used to support a worthy cause.

The loss of one of its hosts to depression, saw men’s mental health become a focus of the ride along with its continued support for Prostate Cancer.

Motorcycling has always been my great passion. I used to race when I was younger up until I was 36 and through fellow bikers I heard about the initiative.

The charity is fantastic in that it supports and raises awareness of men’s health and also illnesses such as dementia which has affected family members and friends of mine.

I have known Tom Kindly, one of our joiners since he was a young lad. Like myself he has a great passion for motorcycles and was keen to get involved.

The day started for us on Scotswood Road in Newcastle where all the riders met, we then travelled to Gosforth up to the racecourse, down to Seaton Sluice, St Mary’s Lighthouse in North Tyneside before we travelled back along the coast ending at Newcastle Quay side on the River Tyne. We stopped at each destination to allow people to see our bikes and to inform people as to what we were doing.

So far, the Newcastle ride alone has raised a staggering £10, 952! That is the amount from just one city and this is a global scheme!

For next year, I’m intending to a ride in Holland to support the cause, take in the culture and enjoy an adventure with like-minded people along the way.
